Pancho said to Lefty hey I’m dying
the doctors say I aint got very long
they say there’s cancer all throughout my liver
its gonna send me back where I belong
Lefty felt the ground drop out beneath him
he felt his heart fall right though the floor
his oldest friend he loved just like a brother
a man who fought beside him in the war
a tear rolled down his cheek he couldn't help it
it tumbled off and landed in the sand
the first of many tears, he’d cry a river
much deeper than the mighty Rio Grande
Poets tell, that Pancho fell
he may be in heaven he may be in hell
and all that's left of Lefty is a shell
maybe its just as well
Pancho said to Lefty quit your crying
I lived my life I’m not a young man
I need you strong and steady and beside me
I’ve been thinking and I think I got a plan
well Lefty said whatever I can do friend
I’ll be there day and night at your sick bed
but Pancho shook his head and with a smile
said you’re gonna put a bullet through my head
Lefty grabbed his hand and said I’d never.
With all we’ve been through and blood we’ve bled
but Pancho said my friend its for the bounty
I aint worth much alive but I’m worth a fortune dead
a thousand bucks will last you for a lifetime
keep you full of bread and meat and beer
you could even split this god damn desert
I hear Ohio's nice this time of year
Poets tell, that Pancho fell
he may be in heaven he may be in hell
and all that's left of Lefty is a shell
maybe its just as well
Pancho sank down to his knees in front of Lefty
he said I made my peace and this is how it ends
lefty said I love you like a brother
and Pancho said I love you too my friend.
A shot rang out and echoed off a mesa
and Panchos eyes faded into black
and Lefty left the desert sad and lonely
and vowed that he was never going back
